Life science delegation from Japan visits companies and research institutions in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein

News from the Cluster Life Science Nord

A high-ranking delegation travels today with representatives of Hamburg Business Development Corporation (HWF) and life science experts to Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein to find out about options of a strategic cooperation.

Among the guests from Kobe is the head of the Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation (FBRI) and the local director of the Japan External Trade (JETRO) who will stay for two days in North Germany. They are welcomed by Dr. Hinrich Habeck, CEO of the cluster organization Life Science Nord Management GmbH: "We value Kobe as a very strong place for biotechnology and medical technologies. A cooperation of these industries with a highly innovative country like Japan would be of great value for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein."

The aim of the talks between the Life Science Nord Management and the Hamburg Business Development Corporation is to find out, if and how a strategic cooperation between the two cluster regions could be implemented in future. The Japanese government has announced funding for this type of exchange.

The delegation program leads the visitors to the Japanese life science companies Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe and Sysmex Inostics GmbH in Hamburg; both global organizations are role models for German-Japanese cooperation in the life sciences.

Further visits at the research institutions in Hamburg at the Fraunhofer IME ScreeningPort (formerly European ScreeningPort GmbH), and in Lübeck at the BioMedTec Campus complete the journey of the delegation.

The city of Kobe with its 1.5 mio inhabitants is together with Osaka and Kyoto the heart of the metropolitan area of Kansai, one of the largest and economically strongest urban centers worldwide. More than 24 mio people live in this region. The life science cluster in Kobe focuses on medical technologies, clinical studies and biomedicine. With more than 275 companies it is Japan’s largest life science cluster.
