MIPIM: Hamburg offers opportunities for the hotel industry
Hamburg is one of the most attractive hotel location in Germany. The market for additional congress and conference hotels offers great potential. HWF Managing Director Dr Rolf Strittmatter: "In January, the Elbphilharmonie was opened in Hamburg as one of the most spectacular concert halls in the world atop a former port warehouse. By adding to the old red brick of the old “Kaispeicher A“ a modern glass structure, the landmark building today acts as architectural symbol of Hamburg’s future viability. It increases the attractiveness of Hamburg for visitors and is a strong driver of demand in the hotel industry.“ At MIPIM, the world's most important marketplace for the marketing of locations, hotel investors are therefore in the focus of the city’s business promotion. 24 companies and institutions are participating at Hamburg’s joint MIPIM stand. The Hamburg Senate will be represented by Dr Dorothee Stapelfeldt. The Hamburg Minister of Urban Development and Housing will travel to Cannes to showcase the city’s urban development projects at the trade show. While HafenCity Hamburg is slowly approaching its completion, new projects have been developed. From Altona’s new centre to the A7 motorway canopy called “Hamburger Deckel“ and HamburgOst, they will change the image of the city and further increase its urban quality.
Hamburg is one of the most attractive German locations for hotel investors. According to the commercial real estate brokers of Colliers International, Hamburg boasts the best key hotel characteristics in Germany next to Munich. Constant growth and ongoing demand reflect the positive developments in the Hamburg hotel market. In the year 2014, Hamburg's range of accommodation rose by 2.4 per cent from 334 to 342 hotels, followed by an 0.6 per cent growth in 2015 to 344 companies offering accommodation. The number of beds rose by 3.6 per cent to 57,919. The majority of hotel companies are active in the three to four star segment. In view of the ongoing dynamic growth, the city is supporting a demand-driven increase in hotel capacities.
With the newly opened Elbphilharmonie, the travel destination Hamburg once again enhanced its national and international appeal. However, Hamburg still has to a lot to catch up in regard to international congresses, meetings, and the MICE segment. The demand for business travellers is equally high due to Hamburg’s excellent position and potential as Northern Europe’s economic hub.
And as if the Elbphilharmonie were not enough of a superlative, the European XFEL is now launching a science project that is unrivaled in the world. From now on, scientists (f/m) from all over the world are for the very first time invited to apply for experiments at the European X-ray laser XFEL. The joint project of eleven state with a financial volume twice as high as Elbephilharmonie will create the basis for new discoveries, including, inter alia, new insights into disease processes and advanced energy research. Further research institutes, especially from the Fraunhofer Society, are currently being founded or expanded. The hotel industry, too, will benefit from these developments.
