Future Hamburg

Joint Hamburg stand with 63 partners at EXPO REAL 2018

Future Hamburg

"Future Hamburg"– this is the guiding theme of Hamburg’s joint exhibition stand at this year’s EXPO REAL in Munich – Europe’s leading industry fair for property and investment. Moving forward as a visionary city, Hamburg keeps increasing its range of innovative locations that draw on close networks of business and science and serve as a breeding ground for innovative products, processes and technologies. In the area of real estate, new business opportunities continue to arise as Hamburg’s urban development programmes contribute to the city’s endeavour to become the leading science and innovation hub in Northern Europe. The future Grasbrook quarter, for instance, is aimed at providing an urban sphere that supplies fresh impetus for knowledge- and technology-based value creation. Furthermore, to accommodate the development of future innovations, Hamburg is currently creating a network of four innovation parks. From 8 to 10 October 2018, 63 partners from the joint Hamburg stand will be presenting their most recent projects and their innovative services. Dr Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Hamburg’s Minister for Development and Housing, as well Dr Torsten Sevecke, State Secretary at the Hamburg Ministry for Economy, Transport and Innovation, will be present at the EXPO REAL to promote Hamburg as part of several events.

Hamburg – a growing city

Hamburg continues to grow: it is estimated that the city will be home to more than 100,000 additional residents by 2030. The Hamburg Senate is accompanying this development in all its complexity – in an active and forward-looking manner and based on responsible urban development policies: "We are attaching great importance to the construction of quality housing, and we believe in a dual urban development strategy that is aimed at keeping a balance between developing available land on the one hand and converting new, unutilised land on the other hand. Alongside these efforts, there are careful residential construction measures in place in Hamburg’s outskirts," says Hamburg’s Minister for Development, Dr Dorothee Stapelfeldt. "Our goals are clear: affordable housing needs to be available across the city. At the same time, qualified workplaces need an environment to grow, be it in industry, the services sector, the science sector, or in research and development. Moreover, diligent planning facilitates an increase in building density that is to be integrated into Hamburg’s cityscape without impeding its liveability, its precious network of green belts, and its attractive waterside locations," Dr Stapelfeldt adds.

The Grasbrook project: rethinking urban development

The scheduled development of the German Port Museum could mark the beginning of an entirely new cultural era for Hamburg’s new large-scale development project on the River Elbe. The Grasbrook quarter is aimed at providing room for office units, commercial buildings, academic facilities and research labs as well as numerous residential units. According to current planning, the new quarter will be able to accommodate about 16,000 workplaces, about 3,000 residential units for approx. 6,000 residents as well as retail opportunities, a primary school, childcare facilities, and sports grounds.

The project also foresees the use of existing buildings. On a total area of approx. 46 hectares with a gross surface area of about 880,000 square metres, the new urban development project will have one third of the size of the neighbouring HafenCity district. As part of the project, 4.9 kilometres of public areas along the waterfront will be created, in addition to attractive green spaces and high-quality public urban spaces. In developing the Grasbrook quarter, innovation orientation takes precedence over speed. And this applies to the companies that are to relocate here as well as to mobility and energy concepts. Following an in-depth review and the identification of key strategic topics, an urban design competition will be launched, which will ultimately result in an urban development design. This will be followed by the formal planning procedures, which will comprise e.g. the design of a zoning plan and a development scheme.

Hamburg’s innovation parks

To accommodate the development of future innovations, a network of four innovation parks is currently being created in Hamburg. Each being provided with a scientific anchor institute, the innovation parks will offer commercial spaces for companies, research institutions and startup businesses. With its unique combination of expertise from academia and industry as well as competent networks and coworking spaces, these locations will provide an ideal environment for successful interdisciplinary innovations, startups, and young talent. The innovation parks will each have a different research and development focus, such as life sciences, laser technology, and greentech. With the Center of Applied Aerospace Research (ZAL), Hamburg is already home to an innovation park that is geared towards aviation. All of the parks are developed, marketed and operated by Hamburg Invest. Birgit Detig, Chief Operating Officer at Hamburg Invest, explains: "Hamburg has relevant expertise in a number of forward-looking fields of technology, and these fields will be shaping the economy of the future. This capacity to add knowledge-based value contributes to attractive, secure jobs being created in Hamburg."
