EXPO REAL: Business development 4.0 is becoming a reality in Hamburg

Frank Horch, Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs, to present Hamburg’s one-stop agency for investment in front of international audience

EXPO REAL: Business development 4.0 is becoming a reality in Hamburg

EXPO REAL, the international trade fair for real estate and investment, is taking place in Munich, Germany, from 4 to 6 October. Hamburg’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Frank Horch, chose this event to announce the new structure of Hamburg’s business development agency, stating: “For the Hamburg Senate, the real estate industry is a strategic partner in urban development. To streamline collaboration with the City of Hamburg, we have now expanded the scope of the HWF Hamburg Business Development Corporation by making it a one-stop agency for investment.”

"In future, the HWF will operate under the umbrella brand of ‘Hamburg Invest’ and will be responsible for marketing all municipal commercial and industrial spaces and for operating Hamburg’s research and innovation parks. In addition, Hamburg Invest will be establishing a central point of contact for knowledge-based startup businesses. In Hamburg, business development 4.0 is becoming a reality,” Mr Horch added. With 65 companies and institutions present at this year’s joint EXPO REAL stand, the number of organisations contributing is higher than ever before. For the first time, there will be as many as three Hamburg Senators attending the EXPO REAL: Frank Horch, Senator for Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation, Dr Dorothee Stapelfeldt, Senator for Urban Development and Housing, and Dr Peter Tschentscher, Senator for Finance, will be promoting Hamburg as a location in various events and talks with investors.

At the EXPO REAL in Munich, Hamburg is presenting itself as a “free port of innovative ideas”.  Four municipal research and innovation (R&I) parks, the planned Hamburg Innovation Port (HIP) at the Harburg upriver port, and the HafenCity University’s CityScienceLab are representing Hamburg as an innovation location. The CityScienceLab is a cooperation project with the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Initiated by the Hamburg Senate as well as private companies, a network of R&I parks is currently being established in Hamburg. Provided with a scientific anchor institution, these parks offer commercial spaces for innovation-oriented enterprises, research institutions and new entrepreneurs. The parks cover different research and development areas and will create synergies by addressing the relevant value chains. The current planning agenda includes the development of several R&I parks in Hamburg in the areas of life sciences, laser technology, and green technologies. A further R&I park in the area of aviation has already been established – the ZAL Center of Applied Aeronautical Research. Things are also moving at the Harburg upriver port: initiated by Arne Weber of HC Hagemann, works on the Hamburg Innovation Port (HIP) project, a research and technology centre, are now in full swing in the area between Blohmstrasse and Ziegelwiesenkanal. From 2018 onwards, 8,000 square metres of office and research spaces will be available for companies, founders, and for potential extensions to the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH). Once completed, the HIP will accommodate more than 3,000 work spaces on an area of 70,000 square metres.
